Intermodal Competition in The London-Paris Passenger Market: High-Speed Rail and Air Transport
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper studies interand intramodal competition in the London-Paris passenger market. Using revealed preference data, we estimate nested and mixed multinomial logit models to examine passenger behaviour in the London-Paris market. We present a case study on the relocation of Eurostar services from Waterloo International to St Pancras International station. The results show that competition is present in this market. Demand is elastic, and passengers are heterogeneous in their valuation of fares and accessibility. Aviation and high-speed rail are homogenous in unobserved effects. The large market share of the Eurostar and the withdrawal of aviation alternatives indicate that competition will decline in the long-run.

Lessons for Policy Makers in Non-High Speed Rail Countries: A Review
High speed intercity passenger rail is an inherently strong railway application. It operates over 250 km/hour. For perspective, high-speed represents the ultimate development of preexisting standard gauge infrastructure. Network of high-speed passenger rail lines aimed at reducing accident, reducing traffic congestion, air pollution cutting national dependence on foreign oil and improving rural...
متن کاملPossible Railway Futures
The centuries since the birth of the Industrial Revolution have seen a succession of increasingly sophisticated transport technologies, each offering improvements in speed, carrying capacity and/or operational flexibility. Having spent this time overcoming the physical barriers to freedom of movement imposed on us by the natural world, humanity now appears to face two immense, and related, chal...
متن کاملFactors of air-rail intermodality
European transport policy promotes intermodality as a means of improving efficiency and sustainability. This study looks into passenger air-rail intermodality at airports which are directly integrated into long-distance rail networks and focuses on intermodal journeys in which the rail trip doesn’t serve the purpose of city-centre to nearby airport access, but rather makes up a substantial leg ...
متن کاملA Multi - Stage Approach to Air - Rail Competition : Focus on 1 Rail Agency
7 This paper proposes a three-stage game-theoretic model to study air-rail competition in intercity 8 passenger corridors. We consider duopolistic markets, in which a rail agency competes against an airline to 9 maximize their respective objectives. The objective of the rail agency can be maximizing profit or social welfare, 10 or a mix of the two. At the top stage, the rail agency first determ...

The ambitious planned development of the high-speed rail (HSR) network in Spain requires the implementation of new sector regulations to fully achieve its objectives, namely to make the sector more competitive and to promote a more balanced and efficient transport system. For this purpose, the Spanish administration recently launched the new Rail Sector Act (39/2003), on a national regulatory f...
